As a child, like many others, I was fascinated by the police and army professions. I often imagined the thrill of winning games and athletic competitions, basking in the applause of a cheering crowd. In school, I participated in cultural programs whenever the opportunity arose, and I also joined the Cubs and later the Scouts.
Changing Priorities
However, as I grew older, my interest in Scouts and NCC faded. I even gave up the chance to join the NCC Navy during my college days, giving an excuse that was insignificant. After a certain grade, I didn’t participate in any sports events either. My childhood fascination with the army and sports was rooted in innocence, yet I wasn’t ready to put in the effort required by such professions.
What is Physical Intelligence?
To succeed in sports or pursue a career in the police or armed forces, one must be physically agile and resilient. This is where physical or kinesthetic intelligence becomes essential. Physical intelligence refers to the capacity to control one’s bodily movements, maintain energy, and possess flexibility. It is our brain’s ability to coordinate with our body effectively and efficiently.
Components of Physical Intelligence
Physical intelligence can be divided into two components: gross motor skills and fine motor skills.
Gross Motor Skills
Gross motor skills involve whole-body coordination and are essential for high-energy activities like football, cricket, marathons, sprints, and even dance.
Fine Motor Skills
Fine motor skills are all about precision and dexterity, focusing on eye-hand coordination. Activities such as writing, drawing, playing musical instruments, and target sports like carrom, archery, and shooting depend on fine motor skills. Even singing, to some extent, involves these skills.
Most actions require a balance of both: around 85% gross motor skills and 15% fine motor skills. This balance plays a vital role in a variety of activities and professions.
Assessing Physical Energy and Capacity
For anyone considering a profession or sport that demands significant physical effort, it’s essential to assess their physical energy and capacity.
While physical strength can be enhanced through nutrition and adequate exercise, ultimately, our body provides valuable feedback that can guide us in choosing a path aligned with our natural abilities.
